Our experienced and sea-savvy Captains will take you right up close to some of the most famous sights the Fjord has to offer, sharing stories and tales along the way. You’ll get to see the renowned Pulpit Rock: a 600m high plateau jutting straight out from the surrounding mountainside, Vagabond Cave: an old hideout for tax evaders, Whisky Falls: a 75m tall waterfall right below an old moonshine distillery, and so much more.

We’ll take you on a deep dive into the fascinating history of the fjord, explaining how the last ice age shaped its breathtaking cliffs and deep waters, and recount some of the colorful characters who have frolicked within its bounds. Throughout the voyage, you’ll also be on the lookout for the bustling wildlife that inhabits the region. On a good day it will be possible to spot seals, porpoises, sea eagles, and more.

The tour starts and ends in the heart of Stavanger City, onboarding takes about 15 minutes and the tour itself lasts 1 hour 45 minutes. Our experience is tailored to passengers ages six and up. Skimming the waters on a RIB is exhilarating, but not extreme in any sense. From towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls to hidden caves and secluded beaches, there's no better way to experience the dramatic beauty of the Lysefjord than from a seat in our boats. So book your adventure today and let us give you something to reply when your friends and family ask if you did anything fun in Norway.

Tour Itinerary

  • 1. Stavanger Harbor

Ready, set, go! The adventure starts in the heart of Vågen in the central Stavanger city harbor. Here, you'll be greeted by our experienced crew who will ensure you're fully equipped for the journey ahead. Each passenger will receive a life jacket and specialized flotation suit, designed for comfort and safety on the open water. Our crew will provide a comprehensive safety briefing, covering essential rules and guidelines to guarantee your wellbeing during the tour. Once everyone is ready, and all questions are answered, it's time to board the RIB and set off on an unforgettable journey towards the majestic fjord.

  • 2. Stavanger City

On your way out of the harbor, you will pass by Stavanger from the seaside, a true picture of Norwegian history. The speed starts out gentle, allowing you to take in a full view of the vibrant life on the waterfront.

Experience the hustle and bustle of one of the energy capitals of the world, where fishing boats and yachts moor side by side, and quaint 19th century cottages are reflected in the glass facades of cutting-edge shopping centers.

Make sure to catch a glimpse of both the Norwegian Petroleum Museum and the Norwegian Canning Museum to see the seeds of industry that enabled the city to grow into what stands before you today.

  • 3. Fjordward Bound

Embark on your adventure to Lysefjorden as you move into the open waters and leave the city astern. Equipped with two four-stroke engines of 300 horsepower propelling you forward, you’ll skim across the surface at up to 40 knots, zooming past islets, reefs, and mountains. Close your eyes and focus on the ocean breeze piercing your face or keep them peeled to absorb all the magnificent sights around you. As you race along, you'll see other boats navigating these pristine waters, cozy seaside cabins nestled along the shore, and some sizeable salmon farms. These farms, dotting the coastline, offer a unique insight into the local aquaculture and are a testament to Norway's commitment to sustainable fishing practices.

  • 4. Lysefjorden Bridge

Your destination is now close at hand. As you get ready to enter a land of natural marvels, a man made one greets your arrival. The majesty of the Lysefjord Bridge should not be overlooked as you pass under it. Known locally as Lysefjordbrua, it’s a suspension bridge that spans the fjord, it connects the municipalities of Strand and Sandnes, serving as a critical link in the region. Constructed between 1995 and 1997, the bridge is a substantial structure stretching 639 meters in length, with 50 meters of height in clearance to accommodate the ferry services that operate in the region. The height of the supporting towers, which are made of reinforced concrete, reach 102 meters.

In recognition of its aesthetic and functional design, the Lysefjord Bridge was awarded the Beautiful Roads Award in 1999 by the Directorate of Roads (Vegdirektoratet) in Norway. This accolade underscores the bridge's importance not only as a transportation route but also as a landmark that enhances the scenic beauty of its surroundings.

  • 5. Lysefjorden

The Lysefjord, extending an impressive 42 kilometers in length, with waters up to a depth of 456 meters, is a marvel of natural beauty nestled in the heart of Norway. The fjord, carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age, showcases a dramatic landscape where steep mountains, adorned with lush emerald green forests and cascading waterfalls, rise sharply from pristine waters. The fjord's name, meaning "light fjord," is derived from the light-colored granite rocks along its sides.

World renowned natural formations draw thousands to the fjord every year, including Pulpit Rock, a flat topped 604 meter tall cliff offering breathtaking views, and Kjeragbolten, a large stone wedged solidly in a mountain crevasse 976 meters above the seafloor. Manmade wonders grace the fjord as well, most famously the 4444 Flørli steps, which is the longest wooden staircase in the world.

As you venture through its narrow corridor, you’ll be on the lookout for the bustling wildlife that inhabits the region. On a good day it will be possible to spot seals, porpoises, sea eagles, and more. Then, as you stare furthest into the depths of the fjord, you’ll be spellbound by the blue haze that often lingers on its horizon. This mesmerizing phenomenon, created by the scattering of sunrays, further enchants the fjord and adds to its mystical allure.

  • 6. Vagabond Cave

Vagabond Cave, known in Norwegian as ‘Fantahålå’, is a deep hidden recess in the fjord’s mountainside. But this landmark isn't just a natural marvel - it also holds a wealth of historical significance. Your Captain will tell you the story of this deep cave, illuminating its history as a secluded shelter for vagabonds and wanderers in the 19th century who sought to evade the watchful gaze of the authorities and avoid paying their taxes, reportedly spending months at a time holed up in there together. As the legend goes, whenever the Taxman got too close, the dwellers of the cave repelled them by pelting them with rocks.

  • 7. Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen)

If you want to truly experience the grandeur of Pulpit Rock, known in Norwegian as 'Preikestolen', there's no better way to do it than from the sea. Our tour offers an unforgettable opportunity to behold this natural wonder from the most awe-inspiring perspective possible. Rising 604 meters above the crystal-clear waters of the fjord, you’ll be amazed by the sheer size and scale of this towering cliff face.

But it's not just the size of Pulpit Rock that makes it so magnificent. From the sea, you'll also be able to see the intricate details of the cliff, including its distinctive angular layers of rock that date back to its formation in the last ice age, 10 000 years ago, when a glacier broke off parts of the mountainside.

From its discovery and treacherous first ascent by Thomas Peter Randulf over a hundred years ago, to its descent by one Henry Cavill by way of Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Fallout; from daring climbers who scaled its precipice to Nepalese Sherpas who tamed the trail and made the summit accessible to all, our captain will lead you on a voyage through time of the rock’s special place in Norwegian history and culture.

  • 8. Whisky Falls

As we approach Hengjanefossen, you'll feel the power of nature in all its glory. This waterfall, also known as ‘Whisky Falls’, stands 75m tall and is unique in that it's not a single, uniform cascade. Instead, it's a complex system of streams and falls that weave together to create a truly mesmerizing sight. As the water pours down the cliff face, it creates a mist that shrouds the mountainside in an ethereal haze. Your captain will take you right up to the base of the falls, giving you a perspective few people ever get to experience. You can even grab a drink if you're up for it, the runoff is crystal clear, though sadly not as potent as the nickname may suggest. This playful moniker actually harks back to a bygone era, a nod to a moonshine distillery that once operated in its vicinity, run by a German fellow named Heinrich Mohr.

If you’ve never been on a RIB-Safari before, get ready for an incomparable front-row seat to the wonders of nature. You will get right up close to the wilderness, weave through narrow passages, and be afforded photo opportunities you won’t get anywhere else. Our Fleet - The Grand D950 Rafter

Only the best is good enough. With us, you’re always guaranteed an adventure in newly purchased top-of-the-line RIB boats. Our fleet is solely made up of 31-foot Grand D950 Rafters. This state-of-the-art model was designed in collaboration with top Ukrainian and Swedish engineers, boasting exceptional sea-keeping abilities and comfortable high-speed cruising. It features a reinforced fiberglass hull with an "Ultra deep V" design, Hypalon pontoons, and twin 300 horsepower engines. With only twelve passenger seats, these boats ensure a personal and exclusive experience for our guests.

Is this tour for me?

Skimming the waters on a RIB is exhilarating, but not extreme in any sense, our tour is suitable for most anyone between the ages of 6 and 99 with an adventurous spirit. We pride ourselves on providing great fun for people from all walks of life: our oldest passengers have been well past their 90th birthday and we’re used to helping mobility impaired passengers get on and off the boat. Whether you’re a family traveling together, a group of friends, or a solo explorer, our activity will be a great choice for you.

There are however a few exceptions, we would not recommend our tour to the following groups of people:

  • Persons with severe pre-existing neck or back conditions.

  • Pregnant women beyond their first trimester.

  • Persons who are entirely dependent on a wheelchair.

  • Individuals diagnosed with osteoporosis or other conditions that result in brittle bones.

If you have any questions or concerns about going on a RIB tour, don’t hesitate to contact us. We can put you directly on the phone with our captains to give you authoritative answers to any of your queries.

  • Safety is of course always our number one concern, and we pride ourselves on having been 100% accident free for as long as our company has existed. The boat and captain are without exception certified for their activity, every passenger is provided with all requisite safety equipment, and an extensive safety briefing is always held before anyone is allowed to board the boat. We always take stock of the situation on the sea, and if we are at all uncertain about the safety of embarking on a tour or continuing an ongoing one, due to weather conditions or some other factor, we will without hesitation cancel the tour and issue a full refund for anyone affected.

  • No need to worry. Our RIB boats only hold twelve people at a time, this ensures that our captains are able to maintain constant oversight and make sure everyone onboard is having a great time throughout. We tailor each tour to the needs and preferences of the present group, and always do our best to strike the perfect balance between thrill and comfort. As you will be extensively briefed on before the start of your tour, we also have a simple system in place where if anyone for any reason feels uncomfortable or scared during the tour, you simply have to raise your hand and the captain will slow down and check up on you.

  • The average speed of the boat in a typical tour will be between 30 and 40 knots (55-75km/h), the acceleration curve is however stable, and you will not experience any sudden fluctuations. The course itself is steady and straightforward with no drastic turns or maneuvers. You are unlikely to experience the speed of the boat as discomforting.

The main thing to be prepared for is a fair amount of wind hitting your face. It is however not uncomfortable, and most will find it refreshing and part of the fun of riding in a RIB. If the wind does concern you though, you can ask to sit in the seat beside the captain, which is protected by a windshield.

  • Our RIB boat tour is not very bumpy. In typical weather conditions, the boat will cut through most waves instead of going over them. Though on windy days, some bumps from going over waves will be unavoidable. Our captains do however take great care to ensure that these waves are absorbed as gently as possible and not experienced harshly by passengers. If bumps concern you, sitting further towards the back of the boat will significantly reduce their impact. You can also ask to sit beside the captain, this seat is the farthest back and also features extra feathering and cushioning.

  • No. Our high-end RIB boats are specifically constructed to protect passengers from water splashing onboard. The hull design and inflatable tubes going around the boat act as natural fenders against sprays. You will only get wet onboard if it starts raining as there are no roofs on the boats. The protective flotation suits you will receive for your tour will however very effectively shield you in that event as they are made from water-repellant materials and feature a hood.

  • It is very rare that any of our passengers get seasick onboard. Our RIBs slice through smaller waves smoothly, minimizing the rocking motion that often leads to seasickness. The inflatable tubing around the edges of the boat also provides a significant steadying effect, minimizing swaying both when stationary and in motion. Secondly, the open design of our boats allows passengers to maintain a constant, 360-degree view of the horizon and their surroundings, this helps align the visual and vestibular (inner ear) inputs, which plays a crucial role in preventing the disorientation that can cause seasickness.

‘Book with Confidence’ Guarantee

We want our customers to feel safe and empowered when booking a seat on our boats, that’s why we offer our customers highly flexible terms of purchase, what we call our ‘Book with Confidence’ Guarantee.

Free Rescheduling or Cancellation: You can reschedule or cancel your RIB boat tour free of charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled departure.

Refund for Cruise Berthing Issues: For guests expecting to arrive in the Stavanger region on a cruise ship, in the event that the scheduled berthing of your ship is cancelled, we will offer a full refund for your booking even if the 24-hour cancellation window has passed. Back-to-Cruise Commitment: If you’re a cruise tourist, you do not need to be concerned about joining a tour later in the day, we are always very much aware of when your ship departs and will make absolutely sure you get back in time. We have never had a guest of ours be late for their departure time, and we intend to keep it that way.

Force Majeure Refunds: Should your tour be prevented from going ahead due to force majeure reasons, such as unsafe weather conditions on the sea, we will provide a full refund even if the 24-hour cancellation window has passed.

Provided Gear

We will supply you with all the must-haves you need to participate in our tour. You do not have to do anything but show up to join the adventure.

Key Equipment

  • We provide high quality one-piece flotation suit overalls for all our passengers. These offer thermal protection and will keep you comfortable throughout your sea adventure. They feature fabric made of water repellant materials plus a wraparound hood, ensuring you’ll also be fully protected in case of rain. In the unlikely event of going overboard, these suits will also provide buoyancy support. We offer suits in a wide variety of sizes ranging from child size to quadruple XL, ensuring that you will be able to find a snug fit no matter your body type.

(After your tour, please remember to check every pocket in your suit to make sure you’re not leaving any personal belongings behind.)

  • Wearing one of these is naturally a requirement for anyone partaking in our tours. Our life jackets, provided in both adult and children’s size, employ a lightweight design that wraps snugly around your neck, featuring adjustable straps to ensure a secure fit for any body type. They are equipped with an advanced deployment mechanism that triggers automatic inflation upon submersion in water. Additionally, there's a manual inflation option through a tube, offering extra reassurance. As part of our comprehensive safety briefing held before each tour, we'll guide you on how to effectively use these life jackets.

Optional Equipment

  • We also offer optional goggles to our passengers. These goggles are designed to shield your eyes from the wind, ensuring a more enjoyable ride. They are secured with an adjustable strap, making them suitable for all head sizes and easy to wear. They are made from clear and sturdy plastic material providing an unobstructed view while protecting your eyes from the elements.

  • We also offer optional gloves to our passengers for additional protection. When you need to steady yourself on our tour, you will be holding onto a bar built into the headrest of the seat in front of you, so it’s smart to keep your hands extra warm.

Suggested packing list

While none of these items are mandatory for participating in our tour. To have as great an experience as possible, you should consider bringing along the following:

Adequate Clothing: Remember that it’s always colder at sea than on land. While our provided flotation suits will do a great job keeping you warm, we recommend arriving for your tour dressed appropriately for the weather conditions the day of your departure. This is particularly important on colder days: you should feel comfortable when standing at the harbor, getting ready to board.

Camera: Of course a must, definitely bring along a dedicated camera or use your phone. The boat will stop for plenty of great photo opportunities throughout the tour. We recommend making sure your camera is securely attached to your person, ideally with a strap.

Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the glare of the sun on the water. While we offer goggles, these do not provide UV shielding for your eyes.

Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, UV protection for your skin is essential.

Hat or Cap: A hat or cap can provide additional protection from the sun. If you’re wearing one, make sure they are well secured to your person, ideally with a strap, as they can blow off in the wind.

Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the tour.

For colder days, also consider:

Beanie or woolen cap: Keep your head warm and protected from the chilly sea breeze, ensure it covers your ears for full protection.

Buff or neck gaiter: For particularly cold days, it’s wise to cover your face as well.

Meeting Point

We meet all our passengers at Strandkaien 37 (4005 Stavanger), which is right by the innermost floating dock in the Stavanger city harbor. All our boats are brilliant white with 'Stavanger RIB' clearly painted on the side.

Please meet up 15 minutes before the listed starting time of your tour to receive all necessary equipment along with a safety briefing.

  • If you need any help finding us, the Stavanger fish market, a one-story glass building with triangular roofs, is right beside our meeting point, locals will know where it is. Nearby there is also a rather large stone pillar with an abstract steel statue on top that is clearly visible from a significant distance, give us a call and we can meet you there should you get lost.

There are plenty of benches nearby where you can sit and take in the bustling life at the harbor if you arrive too early for your tour. Should it start raining, there are also parasols between these benches which you are allowed to open to keep yourself dry.

There will generally also be one or more people at the dock taking walk-up sales wearing clothing clearly marked with 'Stavanger RIB', if you see them, you know you've come to the right place. You can also feel free to ask them any last-minute questions about your tour.
